I think an Apple TV with a Blu-ray, Boxee like social-goodness, an App store and constant refresh on the software a la the 360 would be a winner. Imaging tying the new Apple webpad or iPhone as remote and it becomes even sexier.

Perhaps the Apple version of licensing is that they pretty much "own" the Apple TV portion as a sub-system, which works just like Apple TV, embedded in a regular TV.

I think Apple likes to control the experience too much to license technology to an OEM partner. Jobs et al can't stand the thought - rightly so - of a third party hardware company screwing up the experience and tainting the Apple brand.

The Apple TV was pretty forward thinking at the time, but its really a pretty limited box today in the fast-changing world of OTT set tops. I think the next version will have upgradeability similar to that of current generation game consoles. Think of how the 360 has remade itself in the past two years - that's what I foresee with the next Apple TV.

Building extra stuff into a TV is a really bad idea. People keep their TVs for a long time. I've spent maybe $16k on cameras and computers in the last year... but I'm still using a creaky 30-inch vacuum tube HDTV I bought in 2005.

Apple wants to be in businesses like portable music players (replaced about once every 2 years) and phones (about the same).

My strategy for the living room entertainment market would be to build the world's best Blu-Ray player. I know Apple thinks that discs are dead, but the Internet isn't close to being able to deliver true 1080p HD video on the fly. So build a Blu-Ray player that is sleek, fast, works well, and can play all the media from your iPods and your computers and stream video over the Internet. Make it social like Boxee. Make it an open platform (think Mac, not iPhone) and let third parties build amazing stuff on top of it. Sell it for $399.

I agree - does not make sense for Apple to have an HDTV. Then again - what do we mortals know...

Apple TV is a loser because it doesn't do anything useful, and an HDTV probably wouldn't either. The Apple TV is a small computer without the ability to load any programs. No browser, no codecs, no DVD player, no peripherals -- it's a joke and sells like one. (#711 seller in Amazon electronics). Also, I'll bet half the sales are to hackers because you can hack it by plugging in a USB drive.

One alternative option for Apple is to license Apple TV to other TV manufacturers, or have an OEM partner to do that.
