Sprint (Clearwire/WiMAX) would also make sense from a content perspective, since Clearwire has investment from three cable operators, and one of them (Comcast) just launched a TV Everywhere service.

Another reason for Apple to jump in with Sprint/Clearwire would be to pre-empt another Clearwire investor, Motorola, but MOT probably wouldn't sit idly by...

with a QC MSM ASIC on board the iPhone will be able to do both. Adding HSPA+ wont garner the same new market share. Mobile devices with WiMAX will need CDMA too as they'll be roaming a good deal of the time - and as Kevin points out such devices will need to support another band (2.5-2.69) and another $25 ASIC.

Good thoughts, Colin. I don't see Apple buying into the U.S. WiMAX market though. That would shackle new handsets with a wireless technology that only one of the big four carriers here is adopting. I'm thinking Apple would go with an HSPA+ phone first, then migrate to LTE, but that's just my guess.
