As Facebook gears up to launch an expansion of its Facebook Connect service at its F8 developer conference on Wednesday, other providers of social services are jockeying for position. The latest move came today from Meebo, which provides web-based chat services but also wants to become the central platform for connecting to social networks through its Meebo Bar. The company has created a consortium — including Google, Yahoo, Microsoft and MySpace — to push for an open social standard called XAuth that would allow many different sites to connect with users through the toolbar.
