Representatives from almost 200 countries began meetings in Durban today, in efforts to secure an extension to the Kyoto Protocol and commitments to greenhouse gas emissions. The EU has been vocal in its push for more stringent carbon cuts going into the Durban conference but without the support of India, Russia, China and the U.S., it’s an uphill climb. And even Europe has to face up to its own debt crisis and the possibility that anything perceived as being harmful to growth will be met with resistance. It’s going to be tough and is further proof that a free market solution, in which a renewable technology is cheaper than coal/natural gas/oil, would be the game changer the planet desperately needs.
