ARM in the data center

It seems that one by one the traditional server OEMs are tipping their feet in the ARM server game. We already knew that HP was partnering with ARM server startup Calxeda to roll out a server in the second half of 2012, but GigaOM’s Stacey Higginbotham reported yesterday that Dell is showing off its own ARM server with the servers available for certain of Dell’s webscale customers later this year. Yes, we’re still waiting for ARM cores capable of 64-bit processing but those designs will be available next year, fairly on track with Warren East’s statement that ARM would be fully ready for the server market by 2014. Calxeda demo’ed its own ARM servers running Ubuntu, Hadoop and WordPress recently, and it’s pretty clear that unless Intel can conjure up a very low power processor in the next 24 months, we’re going to see ARM servers slowly creeping into the data center.
