Google goggles: The next big thing?

Google released a video yesterday touting its “Project Glass” initiative, which is developing augmented reality glasses that deliver Web-based information right in front of your eyes (like “The Terminator”). While the specs are a long way from coming to market, there’s no shortage of opinions regarding their potential: TechCrunch breathlessly says Apple and Facebook should be terrified of the product, and PC Advisor boldly (or laughingly) predicts they will replace smartphones. AR-enabled glasses may someday become commonplace, but there are a ton of hurdles in the way from use-case scenarios (wearing them while driving is out) to the enormous task of changing consumer behavior. So let’s all take a breath and watch the space evolve before we proclaim AR glasses the soon-to-be dominant gadget.
