IDC this morning raised eyebrows with this press release predicting Microsoft’s Windows Phone will claim a 16 percent share of the worldwide smartphone market by 2016, replacing Apple’s iOS as the No.2 platform behind Android. My colleague Kevin C. Tofel is skeptical, noting that IDC last year issued a similar release last year forecasting Windows Phone would become the second-largest mobile OS by 2015. I can understand that skepticism given Windows Phone’s performance so far, but I’m inclined to agree with IDC’s general prediction for reasons I outline in my weekly update — which, coincidentally, published this morning.
