Are YouTube channels just TV that lives on the web or are they something else? The New York Times Sunday Magazine has a long take on that question this weekend arguing that if they aren’t quite TV yet, they’re what TV is becoming. But Robert X. Cringely, who has covered the technology industry for decades and used to produce TV documentaries for PBS, begs to differ. Cringely is in the midst of launching his own YouTube channel, but in a new post on his blog he argues that whatever YouTube is, it isn’t TV, and isn’t likely to become TV anytime soon. But if YouTube isn’t the future of TV what is? GigaOM’s own Matthew Ingram thinks it could be Louis CK and Amanda Palmer.
