The cloud arm of CenturyLink telecommunications is SavvisDirect, who have just launched a private cloud service for application development called AppGrid. AppGrid provides enterprises with the ability to produce and deploy new applications. This makes AppGrid a private PaaS.
The AppGrid service uses the CA Technologies AppLogic product. They allow a SavvisDirect customer to be assigned a cluster of servers and provision virtual services as needed. Moreover, there is an AppGrid management application that allows those in DevOps to manage the application lifecycle.
The movement to private PaaS has been a movement for the past few years, as enterprises look to leverage cloud-based services. However, they view their application development, test, and deployment environments as things they want to keep on premise, and secure.
What’s interesting about this solution is that the closest competition is typically the internal application development infrastructure that’s already in place. While this solution does provide some self-provisioning advantages which are handy in production, application developers are likely to stay with the application development tools that are already in place.
