An angry shareholder has hit Nokia with a class action suit claiming the Finnish manufacturer misled investors regarding its move from Symbian to Windows Phone by claiming the transition “would halt its deteriorating position in the smartphone market.” Nokia predictably responded with a brief statement that the charges are “without merit,” and it will certainly be difficult to prove that the company failed to share information to make it appear that the move to Microsoft’s platform was doing better than it actually was. There’s little doubt that Nokia had to make some sort of move beyond its antiquated Symbian platform, and Windows Phone may have been the best available option. Regardless of what the lawsuit holds, though, the big question is whether Nokia shot itself in the foot by ditching Symbian so abruptly — especially in the emerging markets where the operating system had gained such a solid foothold.
