Opscode Chef Configuration Automation Tool is Facebook Ready

Opscode released the latest version of Chef yesterday.  However, this one comes with a nice bragging right…Facebook uses it.  Opscode claims they beat out Puppet Labs for the Facebook account, and that Facebook actually assisted in testing the new version for them.

Puppet and Chef are tools leveraged by developers and systems admins to automate provisioning and change management within larger and more cumbersome cloud computing systems.  Supporting the concept DevOps, the idea is to have the developers and the operations people work together to provide continuous delivery of cloud services.

These tools are a “must have” if you support a big cloud computing environment.  However, most of those who stand up large cloud deployments view the use of this technology as “nice to have.”  That’s a huge mistake.

The ability to manage, govern, and secure cloud computing environments must be a priority as we define, design, and deploy cloud-based platforms.  I suspect we’ll have enough failed clouds around the lack of this technology that, at some point, it will become better understood.  We should all take Facebook’s lead on this issue.
