RIM gets defensive

Research In Motion is launching something of a counter-attack this week as evidenced by a leaked document outlining multiple BlackBerry 10 devices slated to hit the market early next year. And it’s probably no coincidence that CEO Thorsten Heins this morning insisted his company isn’t in a “death spiral.” But a quick survey of the mobile landscape provides very little hope for RIM: Android dominates the consumer market, Apple’s iOS is the high-end platform of choice and Microsoft’s Windows Phone is gaining ground and is a natural fit for the enterprise. I think RIM will survive as a niche provider of corporate mobile services, but its time as a dominant player in mobile is over.
