Spotlight on data caps

The Senate Commerce Committee will hold its first oversight hearing of the FCC this afternnon since the agency regained its full complement of commissions with the confirmations of Ajit Pai and Jessica Rosenworcel. The hearing starts at 2:30 EDT and will be streamed from the committee’s web site. Ahead of the hearing, Netflix has apparently been shopping around potential questions related to data caps it would like to see committee members pose to the commissioners. No doubt anticipating that the subject will come up, Comcast CTO Tony Werner put up a blog post last night denying allegations that it is favoring its own Xfinity streaming content over that of competitors like Netflix. GigaOM’s Stacey Higginbotham has a good he-said, she-said on the Comcast-Netflix dispute that is worth a read if you plan to tune into the hearing later today. Meanwhile, the FCC may soon be taking up a related question regarding the regulation of over-the-top video service providers, specifically whether multichannel OTT providers like Sky Angel should be treated like cable and satellite service providers for regulatory purposes.
