With the haze of CES and quarterly earnings calls on everyone’s minds, it’s no surprise that research on consumer devices and the show in Vegas was some of the most popular content on Pro this week.
First, in “How new devices, networks, and consumer habits will change the web experience,” Amy Cravens looks at the biggest shift in the web experience of the past decade. As mobile devices (such as smartphones and tablets) continue to rise, content providers are struggling to contend with a rapidly-growing consumer base that expects zero latency across multiple devices in their user experience. Cravens analyzes the major factors that impact web experience and presents a pair of case studies before presenting her shortlist of emerging solutions for addressing web content delivery.
Next, we welcome our newest curator, David Linthicum, who joins Jo Maitland to co-author “Cloud and data fourth-quarter 2012 analysis,” a look back at the major trends and technologies to emerge in the last quarter of 2012. As the enterprise starts to make major investments in both public and private cloud computing, interest in OpenStack and cloud-based databases continue to rise. Predictive analytics and big data in the cloud also had a banner quarter; Linthicum and Maitland provide a primer on which companies to watch, and what might happen next.
Last, Michael Wolf provides a Las Vegas post-mortem in “CES 2013 flash analysis: disruptions and disappointments from consumer tech’s biggest show,” analyzing the results of our latest reader survey to identify the biggest highlights (and lowlights) of the annual show. Wolf also takes a look at major trends such as the Internet of things and 3D printing to determine what’s next for consumer products.
