There is no shortage of news coming out of the first day of Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, but I’m particularly interested in Research In Motion’s announcement that it has acquired Gist. As Stacey points out here, Gist could add a lot of value to RIM’s BlackBerry messaging system by adding social context. RIM has been on something of a spending spree in the last year or two, picking up the browser developer Torch Mobile and the user interface specialist The Astonishing Tribe, among others. The company is getting its house in order when it comes to consumer features, and if it can smoothly transition to QNX it could remain a dominant player alongside Apple and Google.
