There is a lot of news in mobile this morning, but maybe the most interesting piece I’ve read is my colleague Darrell Etherington’s story about VeriFone’s claim that Square’s mobile payment system lacks security. VeriFone — which operates a competing mobile payment system — went so far as to create an app that uses a Square dongle to skim financial and personal information from a user’s credit card, then touted the reported vulnerability in an open letter that has received plenty of attention. I’ll let you judge whether this is an unethical slam on a rival or a justified critique, but Etherington’s solid piece about the latest development in the cutthroat world of mobile payments is well worth a read.
