Verizon’s chip certification paves the way for M2M

My colleague Stacey Higginbotham writes that Verizon Wireless has pre-certified a chip vendor for the first time, giving the green light to LTE chips from Altair Semiconductor. The move will enable manufacturers of connected devices other than phones to use Altair chips to get their hardware on Verizon’s network, rather than having the carrier approve each specific kind of gadget. That will streamline the process for bringing connectivity to a wide range of devices, from kitchen appliances to energy meters to health care monitors. Verizon may have some catching up to do in the world of M2M — a space where AT&T has been a pioneer — but the move to certify chips rather than devices is a big step in the right direction.
